Address to top government representatives and top officials by President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö on 1 February 2018

Madam Speaker and representatives of Parliament,
Mr Prime Minister, Ministers,
representatives of Åland,
representatives of civil service, churches and universities.

Mr Prime Minister, I would like to extend my cordial thanks to you for the congratulations and wishes of success you have expressed on your own and the Government’s behalf.

In accordance with the affirmation I have given, I will, in the office of President, sincerely and faithfully comply with the Constitution and laws of Finland, and further the prosperity of the Finnish people to the best of my ability, as I have done so far.

I would like to thank you and the Government for positive involvement and cooperation as was with your predecessors. I believe that our cooperation will continue actively.

I will also continue to work closely with Parliament, its committees and its parliamentary groups. I believe that our discussions will further strengthen and enhance our understanding of the present state and the future of Finland.

Finland’s independence is a task, and there is still plenty to do. In my speech today at the Parliament, I highlighted some matters that are crucial for Finland's future. We shall work together for these matters and Finland’s success.

Mr Prime Minister. I will carry the mandate given by the Finnish people responsibly. This office involves a great responsibility to promote the common good. Power and responsibility always go hand in hand.

My active cooperation with the Government on foreign and security policy matters will continue.

The world is changing rapidly. We need unanimity and initiative. Climate change, fast population growth, the return of power politics and the inconsistent development of the EU are challenging both Finland and the international community. We strive for stability but it seems difficult to achieve.

To the representatives of Åland present today I would like to say that my aim is to keep engaging in close interaction with you regarding the well-being of your region. I hope that the Act on the Autonomy of Åland will be passed by the time of the centenary of Åland autonomy.

Good and fair governance is the basis of organised society. Let us work for the continuation of our tradition of good governance.

I would like to thank you for your work for the benefit of our country.
